Must See: Socrates Sculpture Park

Let me take you to my little (read big) nook in Queens, New York. It's goes by Socrates Sculpture Park and it's a must see if you're visiting or living in NYC. And those of you hooked on Instagram, just an fyi, there is a ton of photo ops to be had here. Read more after the break.

Love, love, love Socrates park! During my high school career this little oasis was a couple of blocks over and offered my little college-application-stressed out heart some moments of serenity. With an awesome view of Roosevelt Island and some majestic art installations, this spot definitely demands a visit after the Noguchi museum. Actually this spot demands a visit regardless, it's the only place in NYC dedicated to showcasing sculpture outside. Unfortunately the day was a little overcast, but just imagine the possibility when it's lovely out.

The best part... it's completely free.

And if you're into outdoor movies, you should sign up for their email list and enjoy the screening when the weather outside becomes delightful.

Must See: Noguchi Museum

If you're ever in the mood to check out a museum, free of loud crowds and insane long lines, then take a trip to the Noguchi Museum.

Don't be daunted by the subway trip and walk over, because there is another great location you can visit after Noguchi. It's the Socrates Park and amazing for photo ops and art of course, I'll write more about it in a future post.

The Noguchi museum is a must see because it's the only museum in the states that was founded by a solo artist (Isamu Noguchi) and is still dedicated to his work. Now this museum may not be for everyone, but this museum can be seen as a sanctuary for those who appreciate sculpture and minimalism.

And for those creative types, if you're having second doubts about going just remember you will never know what will trigger your inspiration.

'I Who Have Arrived in Heaven' - Yayoi Kusama

Mirrored Room - Yayoi Kusama

After a two hour wait, I was finally ushered into the Mirrored Room. With mirrored walls, strings of flashing lights, and a small body of water I was taken aback by the pure beauty of it all. After quickly drinking in the atmosphere of the room, I pulled out my phone for a few quick snaps before my forty-five seconds of bliss were up. This was truly instagram worthy.

Days of a Continual War - Yayoi Kusama

Grateful for the introduction of Yayoi Kusama by a close friend, my curiosity got the best of the me and for good reason too. Kusama's playful and awe-inspiring light installations engages the art-goer in a unique and fun way of experiencing art making it accessible to everyone. There are four fantastic rooms to be seen at the David Zwirner galleries, so make sure you catch them all.

After viewing the Mirrored Room you must view Kusama's most recent paintings where they adorn the white walls with their psychedelic colors. With small doses of infinity nets, she continues to feasts our eyes on repetition and new patterns that include faces and eyes.

Love is Calling - Yayoi Kusama

Love is Calling, is Kusama's second mirrored room at this exhibition. The line moves quickly for this exhibition as it is a group experience compared to the first infinity room. This room is covered by colorful tentacles that flow in variations of saturated hues and an overabundance of dots; a Kusama piece no doubt. After visiting both infinity rooms and her vivid paintings, I am intrigued by the thoughts Kusama dreams up and the hallucinations that haunt her.

The final room is a video installation. Being a fan of video and installation art, I immersed myself in the mirror play and huge screen of Manhattan Suicide Addict. Play around with your viewing experience, get up close and watch the video a few times when you visit. Here's fact behind Manhattan Suicide Addict: In the 1960s, Kusama attempted suicide on the island. She wrote this poem of her experience.

If you do plan on venturing out to David Zwirner before the show's end (December 21st), go prepared. Expect wait times up to three hours, maybe more as the show draws closer to the end. My tips on surviving the line would be to bundle up, bring a mophie or another source to keep your phone charged, and go with friends. Having your friends in tow makes it easier to explore the other Kusama rooms while still keeping your place in line for the Mirrored Room.
